We visited the Ainu (a Hokkaido minority tribe) Village to see what life was like for them when they lived off bears in the forests and fish like salmon from lakes and rivers. The majority of people in Hokkaido originated from this tribe while the rest came from the other islands. Today, people don't practise the Ainu way of life because of assimilation into modern society. Earlier, women would have their mouths tattooed as protection from evil spirits until the late Emperor Akihito decreed it otherwise. Men didn't cut their hair or beards all their lives.
