This is part of the process of glazed-enamel making. Along the Thapae Road to Sankamphaeng, just outside Chiangmai city limits, you will find the "Factory", which is basically a stretch of factory outlets selling items like Thai silk, umbrellas, Celadon, gems, carpets and so forth at factory prices. Definitely worth a visit, rather than going to the big shopping centres.
